Tomb
inside Bath Abbey.
The Summar doesn't like contre-jour
stuff much. (The proper Summar lens hood - which costs as
much as the lens - was used for all these pictures and I've tried to get
the scans looking as much like the original print as possible.) I
have this same shot taken on a Bronica ETRSi and flare is negligible.
Modern lens coatings aren't a gimmick. The flare from the
windows here is acceptable, but only just. With a specular light
source in the frame, the flare goes completely haywire.

The Circus,
Bath.
This shows the front and back bokeh
at about f/5.6 (the Summar has the old European aperture numbers and
they're not click-stopped either). Bokeh is quite pleasing - the
Summar certainly has the "Leica look" or, as described in the IIIa
manual, a "plastic effect"!

The Royal
Crescent, Bath.
Focus is on the third railing from the right, aperture is f/6.3.
It is perfectly sharp on the print and whether it looks so here
depends on your monitor. Just taken to show the bokeh again, plus
I think it's more interesting than the usual snaps of the Crescent.

Inside Bath
Abbey.
Being a bit cruel here - this is wide open at f/2 and against the main
light source again. The Summar just gets away without too much
flare, and sharpness is surprisingly good.

Outside the
Roman Baths, Bath.
The front sign is very sharp indeed.

River
Avon, Bath.
A general view. Flare isn't a problem with the sun to the
side,but a lens hood is vital. |

I just liked the colours.

Railway
workers' cottages, Swindon
I like my b/w stuff to be contrasty, so the Summar isn't so good.
Still, these identical houses are nice and sharp. I've
"selenium toned" the picture slightly in Paint Shop Pro. This is
Kodak Black and White Plus (similar to, but doesn't seem as good as,
T400CN) rated at ISO 200. |

Wanborough,
Wiltshire
This is five minutes' walk from where I live. The flare here
isn't (all) the Summar's fault, it was early morning mist.

Westonbirt
Arboretum, Gloucestershire
Fuji Reala does most things well, but struggles with the colour of
these primroses. I'm amazed at the framing - it's exactly as I
wanted, despite the amount of guesstimated correction needed with the
IIIa finder at these distances. |

|
Westonbirt
Arboretum
It was a bit dark under the trees - I think I just managed f/4.5 here.
|
Magnolia
tree, Westonbirt Arboretum
This is about f/4.5 again. Parallax error is a swine with the
IIIa when shooting at 1 metre. I have resolved to carry the VIOOH
finder around with me in future, for parallax correction. Anyway,
I remembered to swing the camera up a bit before taking this shot, so
it's framed as I wanted.

The low contrast Summar suits subjects like this better than some
modern lenses. An overcast day helps too!
